Back Pain

healing your neck pain start today, with no drugs but with gentle, skilled hands.

Principle Causes

  • LInbalancement, for exemple: an old injury on your ankle will cause pelvic ring compensation and potentially some back pain
  • Lvisceral tension, (constipation, period ..)
  • L stress, when you are stressed, your breathing patterns change and cause strain and tension in the mid-back. Your shoulders hunch up and cause pain throughout the upper and middle back.
  • LWork habits and bad posture.

Back problems are amongst the most chronic conditions in Canada

Neck Pain

+ In most of the causes , the neck isn’t able to move around freely. A restriction in the movement of the upper back and the neck can cause the muscles to become ‘hypertonic’. This simply means that they have become abnormally tight and that they restrict movement and cause pain.

Principle Causes

L

Traumatic Event/ Whiplash

Car accident, mountain bike-snow fall leading to whiplash.

L

Stress

Car accident, mountain bike-snow fall leading to whiplash.

L

Work Posture

Car accident, mountain bike-snow fall leading to whiplash.

L

Exercises

Some exercises like crunches are the most common.

Headaches & Migraines

Headaches / migraines Headache is a common symptom that can be caused more than 200 different medical problems. Some causes are very visible, but the most common causes like tension type headache are not visible on available imaging. Tension type headache is the most common type of headache.

Principle Causes

  • LWhiplash and/or concussion - neck tension.
  • LNerve irritation: Arnold nerve or trigeminal nerve
  • LArnold nerve: the pain start at the base of the skull and irradiate to the top of the head. The pain may also affect the ear region, the hemifrontal as well as tension behind the eye.

Your osteopathic practitioner will investigate each area where the nerve can be irritated (cervical spine, Base of t he skull, skull)

Trigeminal neuralgia : the pain typically involves the lower face and jaw, although sometimes it affects the area around the nose and also the eye .

Primary trigeminal neuralgia has been linked to a compression of the nerve typically in the base of the head . In osteopathy it is also frequently linked to tension in the pterygopalatin ganglion, located within the head , close to the TMJ.

Migraines are more complex and affect the blood vessel .

  • LDecreased artery blood supply to the brain but hypertonic muscle.
  • LDecrease in mobility of cervical vertebras
  • LHormonal Changes

Jaw Pain

Jaw pain usually happens due to restriction or hypermobility of one or both TMJ joints. your osteopath will aim to restore the best possible function to the area by treating the complex system of surrounding muscles, joints and connective tissue.

Principle Causes

  • L Clinching
  • LDental surgery
  • LThroat and / or neck tension
  • LInjury or impact to the face or jaw

Herniated disc/ Sciatica

Osteopathic treatment aims to reduce the symptoms and pain, by relieving the pressure from the sciatic nerve.

Osteopathy can heal the pain in local and affected areas by decreasing muscle spasm, improving joint mobility, functional movement and lymphatic drainage of the lower limb and pelvic regions.

Principle Causes

  • LAny pressure on the sciatic nerve
  • LDisc prolapse or slipped disc
  • LInflammation of joints causing swelling around the sciatic nerve
  • LBony spur due to arthritis
  • LHerniated or disc bulge
  • LBony spur due to osteoarthritis
  • LTension in the piriformis muscle
  • LSpinal stenosis (narrowing of the spaces or the nerve passage within the spine)
  • LPregnancy

Hip Pain

Hip pain means different things to different people. It is a generic term, describing pain anywhere from the outer lower back and buttocks, as well as groin pain.

Principle Causes

If you are experiencing hip and/or groin pain, an osteopath can help. Your osteopath will assess your lower back and lower limb movement in order to work out the source and cause of your pain. They will look at the other muscles around your hip and groin to see whether they are impacting on your health.

  • LHip osteoarthritis
  • LMuscle tightness, strain or imbalances (often including psoas, glutes, piriformis muscles)
  • LTrochanteris bursitis
  • LReferred pain form lower back or sacro-iliac joints
  • LLigament sprain

Knee Pain

Osteopaths will determine the cause of your knee pain and most importantly help you correct the mechanical imbalances of your knee and other associated regions

Principle Causes

  • LSport injury, strain
  • LSurgery
  • LArthritis
  • LCompensation for an imbalance in the ankle or lower back

Ankle, Foot & Toes

Ankle-foot-toes the most common ankle problem is the sprain… in best case scenario, it swells a bit and after a couple of days it seems to heal. But almost every time the critical position and alignment of one or several joint in the area does not return to normal. You feel better cause the soft tissues have recovered but you carry on walking on an ankle that is not moving freely or position correctly

You can experience discomfort or even pain in the area but up at the knee or pelvis as well .

  • LFasciae plantaris
  • LMorton syndrom, is very painful but can be greatly improved, by rebalancing foot mechanics.

Shoulder Pain

Shoulder pain Shoulder pain is commonly treated by Osteopaths and is on of the most complex problem because of the high range of mobility of this joint.

Principle Causes

  • L Traumatic injury (sport, car accident, fall, your dog on leash pulling suddenly on an other direction ...)
  • LPostural habits (work in front of a computer, repetitive heavy lifting)
  • L stress, when you are stressed, your breathing patterns change and cause strain and tension in the mid-back. Your shoulders hunch up and cause pain throughout the upper and middle back.
  • LWork habits and bad posture.

Elbow Pain

very body knows tennis elbow but, in osteopathic practitioner practices, most of the patients coming for elbow pain didn’t do any repetitive sport movement… the pain appeared progressively…
Because like often in osteopathy… the cause is else where… and in this case in the cervical spine or in the wrist. Your osteopathic practitioner will assess your all arm, your cervical spine. ,skull and ribs cage to find the cause of your pain.

Nerve compression or irritation – if the nerves supplying the arm become compressed either as they exit the side of the neck or pass near to or through structures on their journey through the shoulder and down the arm, pain may be felt in the elbow. The Osteopath will assess the neck, shoulder and upper back, as well as the arm and elbow, to see if the origin of the pain is not local and treat accordingly. Ulnar nerve irritation can also occur if there has been direct trauma near to the tip of the elbow.

Ulnar nerve entrapment – this is when the nerve behind your elbow gets compressed or irritated. The ulnar nerve runs from the base of your neck all the way to you fingers. It can get compressed or irritated at a number of places along the way but it is particularly vulnerable at the elbow. Here it runs over the back of the bone in your elbow and is easier to damage

Wrist Pain

Suffering in this area can restrict your daily routine as you may find difficulty in moving and grasping objects

In British Columbia, there is a special dog-on-leash-goingcreasy type of injury ….it usually occurs when your dog suddenly decide to go on an other direction ,dragging and twisting one of your fingers, your elbow and sometimes even your shoulder .

A proper assessment of the hands, forearms, elbows, shoulder and neck will reveal the root cause of the symptoms in the hands.
